F. Karlafti-Mouratidi: “The Notary’s store: Rules for the profession of notary public at the beginning of the 19th century in the Ionian Islands” In this study we approached and then analyzed issues relating the notarial profession during the first two decades of the 19th century in Corfu island and generally in the Ionian Islands. The primary material that had been at our disposal was mainly regulations upon notary, as well as official correspondence of the competent authority and the administration. Therefore, specific articles refer to the conditions, which anyone who wants to practice the notary must comply with. Namely, the candidate notary public had to be characterized by his morality and good behavior, in addition to qualifying the required knowledge. The function of the audit mechanisms had nearly always been a priority of each administration. Thus, the prohibition for contacts in separated sheets is timelessly repeated, a practice that it would be likely to have consequences on the legitimate interests of the contracting parties. Connected to the latter are all the related provisions on the diligent registration of the documented agreements in notary public record books, which were handed in sealed by the competent officials, and on the adherence to the legal notary procedure in all its phases. Great emphasis is given on the making of testaments, in the context of prohibiting the non fulfillment of the testator's true and last will.
