Journals of James Skene of Rubislaw
Among the holdings of the Modern Greek History Research Centre are three volumes of the journals kept by the prolific
Scottish scholar, artist and traveler James Skene of Rubislaw
(1775-1864). His first visit to Greece, initially for health reasons, lasted from spring 1838 until mid 1843, when he returned to Britain. In
October of the same year he returned to Athens, where he stayed until
the summer of 1845. The three volumes of the journal were donated to
the Centre by Catriona, daughter-in-law of Alexander Rizos Rangavis the younger,
descendant of James Skene, together with the papers of the Rangavis family.
